As Seen On the Fixer Upper {The Faceless Bunker}

BLOWN AWAY with last week's episode of The Fixer Upper....

I keep thinking, this is my favorite remodel Chip & Jo has done yet, and then they just keep getting better and better!!

This family was looking for a modern beach house......in Waco, Texas!!!  So, they chose a run down home with lots of potential of turning it into a Texas "beach" house.

What an amazing transformation......again!

This home must have been quite a challenge for them.  First of all, those original stairs in the home just looked crazy!  That was really the only thing you noticed in the house.  But after Chip & Jo got their hands on those stairs, I knew they didn't stand a chance.

These stairs -- the metal, the wire, the wood -- are definitely my favorite part of this home.  They set the entire tone of the home.

Loved this rug they used in the dining area.  It is a simple black and white graphic pattern that adds a lot of punch to the neutral space.  This rug is an in store exclusive from Magnolia Market.  But I was able to find a couple other similar rugs to get a similar look.

I am obsessed with these chunky floating shelves.  Floating shelves like this are all the rage right now.  I just had some installed in a basement project I was working on -- you may have seen a sneak peek of the shelves on my Instagram page.

The commercial styled rolling island they used in the center of the kitchen is really versatile if you don't have enough space for a fixed island, but are looking for a little extra space for prep work.  They can be rolled off to the side when they aren't needed or rolled into another room for additional space when entertaining.  It really added to the modern style these homeowners were after as well.

I like this simple stainless steel rolling island from Wayfair.com.  And at under $200, it is much more cost effective than a large wood island.

Hardware Bin Lazy Susan from World Market

Joanna also used something similar to this for kitchen decor and storage.  The Mechanics Caddy she used is from her online shop and is double tiered.  But this can serve a similar purpose.  These are great for fun and unique storage in the bathroom.  You can set a mason jar in it and keep your toothbrushes there or lotions and makeup.  They are also great to keep on the kids' table with markers and crayons in.  If you can find a real mechanics bin that was actually used to sort and organize nuts and bolts, that would be even better!

When searching for lighting, don't be afraid to look at outdoor lighting to use indoors as well.  There is no rule that says you can't use outdoor lighting inside.  I do it all the time!  I actually used something similar to this in a bathroom project with the light hanging over each mirror on a double sink.  Outdoor lighting will give you that more rustic, farmhouse feel.

Sometimes, outdoor lighting is cheaper than indoor lighting too!

You can never have too many flowers in your house!  They are my go-to decorating item -- real or fake!

You can get the same look with this vase and these flower stems from World Market.  I have a similar vase in my home that I like to switch out the flowers seasonally.

Another gorgeous remodel!  Joanna kind of stumped me on this one -- it was a little more about the finishes and fixed items than all of the little things filling the space, which is ideal for a modern, simplistic design such as this.

Navy & Green Room to Grow {E-Design}

What's all the BUZZ about these E-Designs?!?!?

I have talked about an E-Design on here before and I have received a lot of interest and a lot of really great feedback on them.  You can see all the details of an E-Design under my DESIGN SERVICES page here.

E-Designs are great for anyone that is able and willing to do the shopping of the items them self and aren't afraid of a little DIY.  This can be someone in the Indianapolis, IN area or located anywhere in the United States, as we work solely through email.  With so much interest, but also so many questions (is this for me? can I do this?) about my E-Designs, I decided to walk you through and show you EXACTLY what you are getting with E-Design services.

How It Works:

Once we make contact, and you decide an E-Design is right for you, I will have you fill out an online Design Questionnaire that I will email you.  This will help me get to know you, your lifestyle, and the space you are wanting help decorating.  From there, you will send me basic dimensions of the space and photos of the space.  Once I look through these items, I will determine your price, per room, according to the amount of work needed and the size of the space.

Example E-Design:

This little guy, who lives in Georgia, is 10 but basically I am designing a room for a teenager.  Mom was looking for a space that this guy will love now, and will still love in 8 years.  Which is kind of a tall order, but I know I can make it work.  So, with that said, I am designing a space for a teenager, not a 10 year old, knowing he will grow into it.

The #1 rule when decorating a kid's space --

Don't decorate for their age now, decorate for years to come and let them grow into the space.

That way, you don't feel like you have to re-decorate and change their space every couple of years.  

After working with Mom through email, we determined what the space needs, what had to stay (wall color, bed and dresser) and what she was open to changing or adding.

She ordered a few new things already from PB Teen that needed to be worked into the space.  So, I gave her some duvet cover options that worked with what she just purchased.

A quick sketch I put together of the space that I emailed back to the client to determine that all of the dimensions and layout of the space were correct before moving forward.

Before pictures are very important!  It is really challenging to design a space without seeing photos of what I am working with.  And I may see something you need that you didn't see -- I could see this little boy needed some extra storage for books!

The before pictures don't have to be perfect.  The best way to take pictures of a space is to stand in the corner and photograph the opposite corner, trying to get as much as possible in the photo.  And then walk around the space and do that in each corner.

From there, I was able to create a design for the family that they will hopefully love and easily create themselves. 

Anything that needs to be hung in a particular way will include a diagram.

I also provided options for furniture layout.

That's it!  It is really simple for anyone to receive E-Design services from Jessica Stout Design.  Once the design is completed and sent out, you have a few basic revisions I will include but can always add to the design or change anything for an additional fee.

I also provided this client a list of materials, so she could easily and quickly order every single item I proposed online. (this is not the full list of materials!) 

Once this room is completed, I hope to share the after photos.  Here is another recent E-Design before + after I shared for a local client.

French Press + Monogram Coffee Mug

I've been thinking about buying a French Press for coffee ever since I read this article about making cold-brew coffee, because I am obsessed with iced coffees.  

I will choose an iced coffee over a hot coffee 90% of the time even on a cold day.  

Basically, what I discovered from buying iced coffee from the grocery store is that they were all cold-brewed!  Who knew!?!  I just thought it was regular (hot) coffee that was refrigerated and chilled.  From what I know, cold-brewed coffee (meant for iced coffees) is a longer brewing time that removes the bitterness from hot coffee and keeps it mild and sweet.

Cold-brewed coffee just tastes better over ice!!  

I tried their original quick + easy cold brewed coffee in a large, sealed bowl overnight, but it turned out kind of messy and kind of a pain in the butt!  :)

So, when I saved up a few World Market Explorer rewards coupons, I decided to spend it on a French Press Coffee Maker.

I didn't realize the one I picked up was RED (it was in a box), but whatever, it's a pretty red!

They had lots of different French Presses to choose from, ranging from $10 up to $40, so I chose one kind of in the middle of the price gap.

I didn't want to get the cheapest one, it was smaller and only made 3 cups of coffee -- which is basically a single serving for me!  And I didn't really want to choose the most expensive one in case this ended up being another appliance I thought I needed and didn't actually end up using that often!

And because one of the coupons was technically a birthday coupon, I decided to treat yo'self to this cute little mug also from World Market for $3!

I love getting all these little coupons for my birthday from stores that I frequent!  It is a great way to get myself fun little gadgets and things I wouldn't normally buy myself!  Happy Birthday to me -- tomorrow!! :)

Now I am making large amounts of cold-brewed coffee at a time and storing it in the fridge.  I go ahead and add my almond milk and a little Truvia sweetener to the cold coffee and it will last in the fridge for up to a week -- if it isn't drank by then!!

Shiplap is back!!!!

I have missed Chip & Joanna's now famous shiplap wall treatment the last couple of episodes.  But it is back this week!  Shiplap has been around for decades, but I think these two are definitely making it a comeback.  What is Shiplap????

There is so much goodness in this one house to talk about!  The lighting, the furniture, the shiplap...another job, really well done!!!  It makes me crazy happy that Jo chose to use Amazing Gray from Sherwin Williams for the paint on the walls throughout most of the home.  It is one of my favorite go-to paint colors!

The appeal of this room definitely starts with the coffee table and leads your eye straight up to that lantern chandelier.  The chandelier may seem oversized, but with its open, airiness, it doesn't feel too big for the space.  You can find a similar style at one of my favorite sources for lighting -- Shades of Light.  The chandelier shown is from Joanna's store Magnolia Market.  The bucket to the left of the sofa is actually a vintage olive bucket and seems to be a new trendy item I've been noticing popping up in home decor.  They are a fun, unique alternative to holding additional blankets in the family room or I think it would look really neat with a large Fiddle Leaf Fig tree in it.  Depending on your budget, you can find a similar coffee table at Restoration Hardware and World Market.  The plants Jo used were probably real -- just a guess, but if you want to get a similar look, you could incorporate these faux potted fig trees.

Lighting can make the biggest difference in a space, but can also be one of the hardest things to shop for.  It is challenging to find really neat, unique lighting.  On her blog, Joanna explained that they made these new lights "look old."  These can be found in her shop.  Shades of Light also offers lots of similar options.  These are two of my favorites from Shades of Light.  Don't be afraid to go bold with your lighting!!

These 3-tiered stands you see in the middle of the island are all the rage right now.  I've seen them at Hobby Lobby, At Home (Garden Ridge), Pottery Barn, Home Goods, and Ballard Designs, and the Painted Fox.  (Painted Fox is an online retailer offering lots of farmhouse decor)  They can be used for entertaining or storing everyday fruits and veggies, or even on the bathroom countertop for everyday beauty products.

The gorgeousness of this home continued into the Master Bedroom.  I love a simply made bed in white linens and a textured duvet cover and pillow shams for added interest and texture.  This is perfection!
